Cassie gazed appreciatively around the tastefully decorated room. “What a lovely apartment.” “Thank you. May I offer you something to drink?” Barbara waltzed over to the mini-bar and pulled out two snifter glasses while Cassie took a seat on the sofa. “How about some brandy? A perfect way to cap off dinner, don’t you think?” “Brandy sounds fine, thank you.” Suddenly Cassie heard a squawk, and her gaze fell upon a covered birdcage in the far corner of the room. She heard the squawk again. Finally, her curiosity got the better of her, so she got up and went to the birdcage and lifted the cover high enough to see inside. “Oh, what a beautiful bird. A mynah, isn’t it?” The bird stared at Cassie and then started hopping from bar to bar, flapping its wings. “Yes. It’s a mynah. She seems excited to see you, Cassie. I just got the bird a few days ago, but the pet store said it’s been well trained and even speaks a little.” Having poured the drinks, Barbara returned the decanter to its shelf and picked up the goblets. Cassie nervously cleared her throat as she received her drink. Then she asked, “Has it spoken yet?” “A little. Nothing remarkable, though. The vet at the store said that she probably wouldn’t say much until she starts feeling at home.” Barbara brought the brandy snifters over to the birdcage and handed them to Cassie. She lifted the cover off the cage, imagining that Cassie would enjoy her pet more if she could see her. The couple crossed the room back to the sofa where they made themselves comfortable. “I, uh, knew someone once who had a mynah. That’s why I recognized it. It was a remarkable bird.” “Well I’m enjoying owning it so far, even though it hasn’t been very vocal yet. I’d rather focus my attention on you, though. You’re more important to me than any feathered creature.” Barbara took Cassie’s snifter from her hand and set it on the coffee table. Then she leaned in and whispered, “Much more important.” She began nibbling on Cassie’s ear, “Let me show you how much.” “Oh, oh yes!” Barbara pulled Cassie in close, and began kissing her way down her neck. “Yes, darling, more!” Cassie’s eyes flew wide open when she realized that the bird had been urging Barbara on and in her voice. However, Barbara, who was thoroughly caught up in the moment, responded to the moans and soft urgings she heard. “Oh, baby, more! Touch me!” Barbara ran her hands over Cassie’s arms and moved to explore Cassie’s breasts. Far from turned on, Cassie couldn’t respond to Barbara’s kisses or touches. The bird was a voyeur and it made her feel like she was part of a peep show. “Wait, wait!” Cassie disentangled herself from her amorous friend and tried to collect herself. “What’s the matter, am I moving too fast?” Barbara lifted Cassie’s hand to her mouth and kissed her palm. “Yes. No. I mean. I don’t know what I mean.” She shook her head in exasperation. “It’s that bird. Please cover it up.” Not wanting to explain anything more, her eyes pleaded with Barbara until the other woman sighed and got up to cover the bird.” “Thank you,” Cassie offered when Barbara returned to her place on the sofa. Cassie didn’t want to tell Barbara that the one who seemed the most turned on by their activities was the mynah. She tried to clear her thoughts and return to what was supposed to be a romantic evening. She and Barbara hadn’t been dating long. Barbara was a teller in a bank, and Cassie worked for a local real estate agency where she’d found temporary work, substituting for a woman who had just gone on maternity leave. Barbara could accept that Cassie was probably shy, and wanted to show her new girlfriend her considerate side. She took a sip of her brandy and offered Cassie’s snifter to her. “I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable.” “It wasn’t you. It’s the bird. I’m sorry, too. I really like you, and I want more than a one night stand. Maybe we should slow down.” “We can do that. I want more, too. I want to know how it feels to see your eyes light up when I walk into the room. I want to know that my touch sets your blood racing through your veins. If we need to go slowly, it’s worth it.” Barbara looked down at the brandy snifter and waited for Cassie’s reaction. Touched by the sentiment of Barbara’s words, Cassie leaned in to hug her. “Thank you. I want this to be right for the both of us.” Then she kissed Barbara’s mouth and held her close again, closing her eyes as the feel of Barbara’s body imprinted itself on her. Barbara was overwhelmed with desire. She said she would slow down, and she had meant what she said, but feeling Barbara’s body so close set her ablaze. She trembled. “Oh fuck! Take me baby.” Upon hearing “Cassie” utter those words, Barbara’s hands came alive and moved furiously over Cassie’s blouse. She tried to pull it out of her slacks, while Cassie tried to extricate herself from Barbara’s embrace again. Flustered, and embarrassed, Cassie quickly stood and snatched her purse from the coffee table and ran for the door. “Cassie? What’s wrong? What did I do? I thought you – “ Barbara’s pleas were cut off by the slamming of her door. “I don’t get it. What did I do wrong?” “Maybe you should have slowed down like she asked.” Squawk!
